Repairing and Refitting The Golden Hinde
1st April 2022One of the first considerations when refitting any vessel and, in this case a 45 year old extensively sailed wooden ship, is choosing a boatyard with the capacity and skills for the job. Under normal circumstances the vessel can sail to the yard, be it nearby or on another continent. For The Golden Hinde’s £1.5 million refit the options were zero. Financially the ship needed to be in her dock in London delivering living history programmes to young and old.
So in 2017 we set about creating our own shipyard 200 metres from London Bridge underneath the ship in St Mary Overie Dock. At under 40 years old it is probably one of the youngest dry-docks in the country. Firstly we drained the dock.
And then? Read about what we did after that in the next The Golden Hinde Refit Blog post.
