CREW REPORT ON HALF-TERM HAPPENINGS

16th June 2024

What an exciting, busy May half-term!

Our very first Shipshape storytime on Monday (27 May) set the week off to a flying start with Captain Bookbeard entertaining visitors with silly songs and pirate stories. Southwark residents were invited to attend for a special offer of £1 per person. It was such a popular event that it is highly likely Captain Bookbeard will make a return appearance - watch this space!

The ship celebrated another first on Wednesday (29 May) welcoming Jess and Jeevan from Southwark Heritage on board for an object handling session to coincide with Local Community History Month. Visitors were able to hold items linked to seafaring and the life of sailors - some over 200 years old - from Southwark Heritage Centre’s collection while Jess and Jeevan explained their fascinating history. Objects included scrimshaws (carvings made from whale bone) and sailors’ good luck charms.

If you are kicking yourself that you missed this, don’t despair as Jess and Jeevan will be returning on the afternoon of 21st August 2024. Keep an eye on our 'What's on' page or social media for more information.

Apart from the storytelling and object handling sessions, the ship also ran engaging Meet the Crew talks throughout May half-term. Visitors met the Navigator on the Main Deck talking about Drake’s incredible circumnavigation journey, the Master Gunner on the Gun Deck giving lessons in firing cannons and, last but not least, the Barber Surgeon sharing many grisly tales about Tudor surgery.

What an amazing week - thanks to everyone who took part in our half term activities! We’re already planning for lots of fun in the summer school holidays so keep an eye out on our social media for updates!
